Where is the place called…?
If you are looking for a particular place name and want to know more information about where it was or what administrative area it came under then the Vision of Britain website is a good place to get information. It uses a number of gazeteers and other sources to bring together useful historical information on places across Britain.
You might also find it useful to use the alphabetical list of Yorkshire places at:

And there are a number of useful online modern maps but the search facility on Multimap is good for smaller and less well known places:
